About Albania: Prejudices
Ernest:
In our society we often judge things or people too fast, and we do that without a valid reason or previously checked information. Influences we get via media, friends or family lead us to have a distorted point of view of this person, group of people, thing, country, etc. The primary mistake most of us make is not to stop and personally analyze such things so as to develop our own opinions about it, without the influence of third parties. Prejudices, in my opinion, cause discrimination and rejection of certain things or people. Thus, it is important to have solid knowledge of something in order to be able to judge properly.
Arriving to Albania has been an important step in our trip, as we had heard many negative warnings about the people and had read some not that positive articles, we were expectant with uncertainty about the country. Getting to experience the country ourselves allows us to do what we are looking to do in each country we pass, which is to get our own first hand opinions about it.
When the sojourn is short (3-4 days) it is hard to get a wide and accurate estimate, but it is also true that first impressions are important and many times conclusive. The people we have met during these few days have been very kind and charitable, both the people from the Don Bosco centers and others. We have never felt unsafe or in a sketchy situation but the total opposite: people have always been very friendly and affectionate, looking forward to help every time we needed something, and never expecting anything in return. A lot of them approached us with curiosity when they saw our bikes loaded to the fullest, showing a big interest for our project, and they all wished us the best of luck and a lot of courage. 50% of the cars that passed us were beeping at us as a friendly greeting, even though when trucks did the same we got scared with their super loud horn we all know… but well, they did it with a good intention.
Albanians have also filled us in on the current situation of the country: corruption is the biggest issue they are experiencing, since it is wide spread and this has numerous consequences. It is shocking to see the last model Ferraris and Mercedes driving by houses that are falling apart. The difference between the rich and the poor is just abysmal.
Poor people are fighting every day to keep moving forward and you can tell this right away. I’m going to tell you an anecdote: we stopped in a small town before leaving Albania just to eat to gather the energy we would need later. Eating at a restaurant is much cheaper than going to the grocery store and buy the ingredients yourself, definitely cheaper than in more developed countries such as Germany, France or Spain. After both of us were full with a salad, fries, chicken, bread and drinks, we were about to pay the bill that was 1,200 Leks, which is almost 9€. The owner of the restaurant gave us the change and we gave her a tip of 200 Leks, about 1.5€. The look in her eye was so deeply thankful, full of incredulity and hope at the same time. In those eyes you could read many things; amongst them the effort and struggle that she had gone through all her life to provide for herself and her family.
That same day we visited a center where nuns were taking care of little children that had been abandoned by their families. In many cases kids had been rejected by their families because they had some kind of disability and that caused their families a feelings of shame and social embarrassment. (Yes, that’s right, there are also people like that). Nuns were doing a great job giving these children a new opportunity to be adopted, after they turned 6, mainly by American and European families.
We will keep on riding on the lookout for experiences and new realities that allow us to get rid of all these prejudices that only create barriers in our minds.
